How does ibogaine work?
Ibogaine appears to interact with opioid, serotonin, dopamine, and NMDA receptor systems. It is believed to act as an NMDA receptor antagonist, and it may influence glutamate signaling, the kappa opioid receptor, and the sigma-2 receptor. These overlapping neurochemical actions are one reason its effects are difficult to reduce to a single explanation.
Its active metabolite, noribogaine, can persist well beyond the acute psychedelic experience. A reported half-life of up to 32 hours may contribute to prolonged changes in brain chemistry, but it also means risk may extend after the most visible psychological effects have passed.
